Spokane Food Policy Council Mini-Grant Application

The Spokane Food Policy Council is awarding four grants up to $5,000 each to advance the goals of the Regional Food Action Plan. The goals are farmland preservation, increasing local food processing, healthy food for all, and reducing food waste. Learn more about the Spokane Regional Food Action Plan.

The application can be found here: https://forms.gle/1RH58qHShFn5Y9nb9

The Regional Food Action Plan was completed in 2022 and was given support by the Spokane City Council as a resolution. More than 350 food system stakeholders informed the plan by responding to a community food survey and participating in community forums in 2020. These stakeholders included producers, processors, distributors, consumers, and waste managers.

The mini-grants will advance the goals of the Regional Food Action Plan and award local food system leaders who are carrying out this work. These grants may support new or existing food system work.

Applications are due Friday, October 13th. Decisions will be made by early-November. If you are selected as a grant recipient, a representative from your organization is expected to attend a Spokane Food Policy Council meeting on Tuesday, November 14th at 4pm.

The Spokane Food Policy Council seeks to advance policies and initiatives that foster a resilient food system in the Spokane area; one that is healthy and equitable for its citizens, economy and environment.

Nutrition? Or Is Food Medicine?

The right food is as important to the body as the right gas is for a car. We have gotten to believe that only a doctor’s prescription for a pharmaceutical is really what is going to make us well when in fact, the opposite is often true. Many of us have reactions to pharmaceuticals because, although based on plants, they have increased the potency of the chemical to a point that is often too strong for many of us. Also, the built-in safeguards that plant-based chemicals often have are removed in a lab-produced chemical that only mimics the plant. […]

Enjoy food. That’s a policy I can get behind.

What does food mean to you?  I ask my students to journal on this question during the first week of Nutrition.  Their responses range from “fuel” (those are usually the athletes) to “comfort” to “the enemy”.  Everyone has some relationship with food, and it varies over the course of our lives, and sometimes it is healthier than others.  My students tend to struggle with this question. […]

Food & Politics: The Farm Bill

Written By: Linda Moulder Begun after the Dust Bowl and Depression years of the 1930s, Congress developed a complex set of safety nets for food, fiber, fuel and energy and named it the Farm Bill. $100 billion is allotted annually to support Farm Bill programs. Federal policies are complicated and the Farm Bill is no […]
